The City of Shelby has been recognized as a Healthiest Employer in North Carolina for 2026, a nationally recognized awards program that celebrates organizations committed to supporting employee well-being through innovative benefits and health initiatives.
This recognition highlights the City of Shelby’s continued dedication to fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes health, wellness, and work-life balance. As the nature of work evolves, organizations are adapting how they support their teams, placing greater emphasis on flexibility, mental health, and holistic benefits to meet employees where they are in their health journeys.

The City of Shelby encourages and incentivizes health and wellness through programs that reward health goals achieved and maintained. Some of those initiatives include free annual health screenings with reduced health insurance premiums for participants; health savings account contributions; chronic disease management programs; employee assistance program; focus on family and work-life balance; annual wellness incentive bonus; employee health fair, and an excellent employee benefits package.
Healthiest Employers® was founded in 2009 to recognize organizations leading the way in employee health and wellbeing. Today, the program is administered by Truven, a Merative business unit that helps employers, health plans, and life sciences organizations turn healthcare data into actionable intelligence through solutions including Springbuk, its health intelligence platform serving more than 7,500 mid-sized employers.
All honorees completed the annual Healthiest Employers assessment, which uses a proprietary 1- 100 scoring rubric. The assessment evaluates six key areas of organizational health and wellness, including strategy, culture, and outcomes. Each response contributes to a Healthiest Employers Index (HEI) that ranks companies within their size category.
The assessment is powered by Truven, a trusted portfolio of healthcare data and analytics that enable precision health intelligence-helping organizations better understand and maximize their data to drive improved health and financial outcomes.
