Utility Services Locator

Performs technical work locating water, sewer, electric, natural gas, stormwater, and fiber utility lines and field data collection. Responsibilities includes: analyzes City GIS mapping data; updates maps and collects field data; locates and marks City owned utilities including existing underground utility lines and appurtenances; schedules routes and workloads from NC811; utilizes computer in truck to receive locate ticket requests and closes out tickets upon completion; manages a variety of special projects, new utility upgrades, and replacements; oversees large scale projects such as highway construction; meets with engineers and planners; determines what utilities are in conflict and need to be marked; trains new employees; assist with GPS field work; and reviews location request to determine if City owned utilities are in conflict or not.

Hours:  Full-time, first shift hours.  Maybe required to work outside of normal working hours in emergency situations.

To Compete in the Selection Process:

High school diploma or equivalent with course work in GIS, electronics or related field and experience in the location of utility lines.  Thorough knowledge of operation of electronic locating devices; manual methods and tasks involved in locating utilities; hazards & safety precautions associated with the work; municipal utilities service policies and procedures; operation of GPS equipment; City engineering standards and specifications; ability to read and understand utility maps and locate ticket directions; and the ability to understand oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude and demonstrated effective communications skills.

Special requirement:  Possession of a NC Driver’s License and completion of gas qualifications to be able to locate per Federal regulations.
