Natural Gas Technician IV

Performs work repairing, replacing and installing gas utility lines, and appurtenances including meters, outlets, regulators, and related facilities connecting, disconnecting and restoring gas service.  Responsibilities include: inspects the work of contractors; maintains regulator stations; tests and calibrates leak equipment; assists in the repair, replacement, and installation of gas utility lines, meters, outlets, and regulators; responds to and investigates gas leaks and broken lines; conducts leak surveys; operates backhoe, dump truck, trencher, tamp, and related equipment; builds and sets residential meters; assists with design and building of commercial meter sets; checks condition of safety equipment; conducts leak review meetings; stocks, loads and unloads trucks; makes repairs to and maintains tools and equipment; assists with valve inspection and repair; assists with general corrosion and atmospheric corrosion control; prepares and maintains records and files; maintains gas maps; assists with SCADA system repairs and testing; works with contractor in the testing of SCADA transmitters; recognizes and responds to abnormal operating conditions.

Hours:  Full-time, first shift hours.  Will be required to work outside of normal working hours in stand-by, on-call or other emergency situations.

To Compete in the Selection Process:

High school diploma or equivalent with considerable knowledge and experience in the installation; maintenance, repair and/or construction of gas lines and facilities as a Natural Gas Technician III.  Must have a general knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions associated with the work and of the City engineering standards and specifications related to the gas system.  Must have the ability to understand oral and written instructions including utility maps and service manuals; must have a mechanical aptitude with demonstrated effective communication and leadership skills.

Special requirement:  Possession of a valid commercial NC Driver’s License. Maintain Operator Qualification requirements as defined for Natural Gas Technician III and successfully complete Operator Qualification requirements for Natural Gas Technician IV within 2 years.  Must complete and maintain excavation, trenching and shoring, flagging and competent person training.
