Water Treatment Plant Supervisor / ORC

Performs administrative and technical work overseeing the operation, maintenance and repair of the Water Treatment Plant.  Serves as Operator in Responsible Charge (ORC) for the Water Treatment Plant.  Responsibilities include: ensures compliance with regulatory agencies as well as state and federal laws; prepares and maintains records, reports and files; supervises staff in the daily operation and maintenance of the plant and related facilities; reviews plant compliance, control data, and lab results; implements changes in operation to maintain compliance; researches and implements corrective actions for plant non-compliance; helps develop preventive maintenance programs; schedules maintenance and calibration of equipment; schedules and logs daily staff assignments; prepares work orders; makes detailed maintenance, inspection, and safety tours of the plant; monitors and maintains pumps and equipment; monitors the plant SCADA system; collects samples and performs minor laboratory tests; analyzes results and enters data into computer; maintains and monitors feed pumps and tanks; monitors and adjusts chemical flow; assists with the recruitment and selection of personnel; motivates, coaches, and reviews the performance of employees; ensures proper training and certification of employees; develops operational procedures; inspects work for completeness and compliance; assists with department budget; monitors expenditures; reviews and prepares payroll; requisitions and maintains inventory of supplies, services, and equipment; responds to citizen inquiries; participates and serves as lead with respect to the Environmental Management System (EMS) requirements.

Hours:  Full-time, first shift hours.  May be required to work outside of normal working hours in stand-by, on-call or other emergency situations.

To Compete in the Selection Process:

Associates degree with coursework in chemistry, environmental science, biology, or related field with considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of a water plant including supervisory experience.  Must have a thorough knowledge of methods, practices, procedures, tools, and equipment used in the operation, maintenance, and repair of water treatment plant and related facilities; and systems; processes and treatment stages involved in water treatment; and applicable safety regulations.  Must have the ability to use laboratory and related equipment; compute and record test results; and interpret engineering specifications.  Demonstrated communication and leadership skills with the ability to operate personal computers including some knowledge of applicable software packages.

Special Requirements: Valid NC Driver’s License and possession of Grade A Surface Water Treatment Certificate.  Possession of a Grade 1 Physical/chemical certification or the ability to obtain within 24 months of employment.
