Project Safe Neighborhoods

The City of Shelby was officially named as a Project Safe Neighborhood community in June, 2005. This program is a federal initiative which targets criminals with guns. The overall goal of this program is to remove illegal guns from our communities.
This is a new and exciting program to the Shelby Police Department and the community that we serve. The acts of violence that we see in Shelby are proof that we all need to get involved and take back our neighborhoods.
The PSN project is headed up by a group of concerned citizens, representatives from the Shelby Police Department, and Ms. Suellen Pierce from the US Attorney Generals Office in Charlotte. This group identifies problems in the neighborhoods and plots out various stratagies to eliminate the problem.
NOTIFICATION PROCESS
The City of Shelby was one of the first cities in Western North Carolina to establish a Notification Process. This program is an effective method of not only deterring criminals from repeating criminal offenses, but also to offer them an option.
