Purpose & Powers
SHELBY HOUSING DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION (SHDC) operates as a non-profit corporation with a six member board that serves as an instrumentality to the City of Shelby since 1981. The board meets when there are business issues to be addressed.
The purpose of SHDC is to relieve a shortage of decent, safe and sanitary housing for persons of low income, including families and elderly, handicapped or disabled persons in Shelby. Also SHDC serves to promote and advance decent, safe and sanitary housing by means of financing housing projects approved by the City of Shelby. SHDC engages in or assists in the development, financing or operation and carrying out or assisting in carrying out such a low-income housing project(s) including assistance by borrowing and lending funds.
Over the years SHDC has been involved with the development of The Charles Place Apartments and the Ezra Bridges Subdivision. SHDC was also instrumental in the purchase of property used for building the Wal-Mart Distribution Center in Shelby. More recently SHDC funds were used in the elimination of slum blight through property acquisition.
