Parks and Recreation : youth council

On  August 16th, 2006 the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board endorsed a request by the Parks and Recreation Director to establish a Youth Council to render advice and take an active role in planning events and special projects. The Youth Council was formally adopted by resolution at the September 18th Shelby City Council meeting.

The City of Shelby Parks and Recreation Department Youth Council is an advisory body to the Parks and Recreation Department and Citizen Advisory Board on matters pertaining to the youth of the community. Youth Council is comprised of students from Shelby, Crest, and Burns Middle and High Schools.

Youth Council Members were special guests at the March 19th, 2007 City Council meeting.

Youth Council members are committed to work on such diverse projects as: Public Awareness; Special Events; Special Projects; Budget and Finance; and other projects selected by the Council. At least one member is required to attend monthly Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meetings.

The 2009/20010 Youth council will have their first meeting on Saturday, October 17th at 9:00AM in the Aquatics Conference Room at the Shelby City Park. New members will be welcomed and election of officers will take place.

City of Shelby Parks and Recreation Youth Advisory Council

Purpose Statement: 

The Youth Council is an advisory body whose purpose is to render advice and counsel to the Shelby Parks and Recreation Department and its affiliated Advisory Board, and other community organizations regarding matters that affect the youth of the City of Shelby and surrounding areas. In addition the Council shall provide youth the opportunity to come together to develop leadership skills and to learn how local government operates; serve as a line of communication between youth and adults and among youth themselves; and participate in youth council agenda projects.  

The Youth Council will form Standing Committees from its membership as described in their by-laws for Budget and Finance; Public Awareness; Special Events; Special Projects; and others as deemed necessary by the Council. The Council shall consider recommendations from the Committees and decide how to execute the approved proposals.  

The Youth Council shall serve as a voice and active participant in matters related to The City of Shelby Parks and Recreation Department’s programs and events on a year round basis.
