Winners of the 2003 Citizen Advisory Board of the Year by North Carolina Recreation and Park Association

On July 9, 2009 Shelby Parks and Recreation and everyone associated - players, coaches, parents, officials, staff, board members and fans lost a great friend and supporter in Larry "Bear" Ware. Larry coached, officiated, operated baseball leagues and served for over 20-years on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. While serving on the Board Larry was very supportive and instrumental in many great park improvements such as the new Aquatics Center, Carrousel and Train Restoration, Golf Course Improvements, Playgrounds and the Holly Oak and City Park and Building Renovations. He was always interested in youth programs that he knew would make a difference in young people's lives. For his hard work and dedication he accepted the 2003 Citizen Advisory Board of the Year Award from the North Carolina Recreation and Park Association on behalf of the City of Shelby Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. While no one can fill his shoes, we can follow his footsteps.

This Volunteer Board is appointed by Shelby City Council and makes recommendations regarding recreational facilities and activities for all age groups and strives to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Shelby.

The Board provides input on a wide range of community recreational needs including programming, facilities, and maintenance. Also, the Board serves to make suggestions regarding future planning and development of recreational facilities.

The 9 member Board meets the third Wednesday each month at 12:00 Noon. If you have questions or concerns about programs or facilities, please feel free to contact a Board Member.
