bio : Mayor Ted Alexander

A native of Morganton, NC, Ted Alexander is the Mayor of Shelby, NC. He was elected in 2003 and re-elected without opposition in 2007. He is currently the Director of the SW Regional Office of Preservation North Carolina (PNC), covering 18 western counties. As a part of his responsibilities with PNC, Ted served as coach for the STEP program in Marion, NC. He obtained a BA in Political Science from UNC-Charlotte in 1982 and a Master’s Degree in Historic Preservation Planning from Cornell University in 1985.  Mr. Alexander has over 25 years of experience in historic preservation, downtown revitalization and community development, having begun work as an intern with the NC Division of Archives and History and the New York State Senate’s Housing and Community Development Committee.  He has worked as the Executive Director for the Bedford Main Street, Inc. in Bedford, VA and served for nearly 14 years as Executive Director of Uptown Shelby Association, Inc.  He also served as the State-wide Coordinator for Virginia’s Main Street Program in the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development from 1993-1996. His wife, Patti, is a school nurse at Shelby Middle School and they have two children, Will and Christina. 

Mayor Alexander is a member of First Baptist Church in Shelby, Chairman of New Wilderness Adventures ministry, a member of the board of the following: Transportation Administration of Cleveland County, Cleveland County Chamber, Historic Shelby Foundation, NCHFA Housing Partnership Board, Cleveland County Alliance for Health, and the Isothermal Planning and Development Commission.
