Zoning Board of Adjustment
PURPOSE
As a quasi-judicial Board, the Board of Adjustment shall hear and decide: Appeals from any order, decision, requirement, or interpretation made by the Zoning Administrator; applications for conditional use permits; applications for general variances and applications for variances from watershed district overlay requirements; questions involving interpretations of the zoning map, including disputed district boundary lines and lot lines; applications for a special exception; and any other matter the Board is required to act upon by any other City ordinance.
MEMBERSHIP
The Zoning Board of Adjustment consists of eight (8) regular members and three (3) alternates. Two (2) regular members and one (1) alternate shall be appointed by the Cleveland County Board of County Commissioners. Six (6) regular members and two (2) alternates shall be appointed by the City Council. The two (2) regular members and one (1) alternate member appointed by the Board of County Commissioners shall reside within the Shelby extraterritorial planning and zoning jurisdiction area (ETJ). The six (6) regular member and two (2) alternate members appointed by the City Council shall be residents of the City’s corporate limits.
TERMS
Board members serve three year, staggered terms. Terms expire in July.
MEETINGS
Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month at 12:00 noon, George W. Clay, Jr. Utility Operations Center, 824 West Grover Street, Shelby, NC.
