Planning and Zoning Board

PURPOSE

The Planning and Zoning Board may:  Make studies and recommend to the City Council plans, goals, and objectives relating to the growth, development, and redevelopment of the City planning jurisdiction; develop and recommend to the City Council policies, ordinances, administrative procedures, and other means for carrying out plans in a coordinated and efficient manner; make recommendations to the City Council concerning proposed zoning text and map changes; approve preliminary plats of major subdivision plats; and perform any other duties assigned by the City Council or authorized by the Unified Development Ordinance.

MEMBERSHIP

The Planning and Zoning Board is composed of 11 members:

  • Eight (8) members must reside with the City’s corporate limits.  These members are appointed by City Council.
  • Three (3) members must reside outside of the City’s corporate limits but within the extraterritorial zoning jurisdiction (ETJ).  These members are nominated by the City Council and appointed by the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners.

TERMS

Board members serve three year, staggered terms.  Terms expire in June.

MEETINGS

Meetings are held on the third Thursday of each month at 11:45 a.m., George W. Clay, Jr. Utility Operations Center Assembly Room, 824 West Grover Street, Shelby, NC.
