If you are moving into an existing building, 

  • Make sure your business is allowed in the area you want to go and obtain a Zoning Permit.
  • Know what type of work you want to do to the building if you doing anything beyond cleaning, painting, laying new floors, etc.:
    • Renovations: Electrical work, plumbing work, moving a wall, cutting a hole for a door, etc.
    • Additions: Adding to the building by increasing the square footage.
  • Schedule a life safety inspection with the Building Inspector and Fire Marshal to make sure your building is safe.
  • With an approved Zoning Permit, utilities can be turned on. 
  • Schedule final inspections with the appropriate departments to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy which allows you to occupy the building.

If you are building a new building,

  • Make sure your location meets the City of Shelby standards. 
  • Submit Site and Building Plans for the City of Shelby to review.
  • Secure Building Permits to start construction.
  • Schedule building inspections regularly to insure a timely completion of your project.
  • Schedule final inspections with the appropriate departments to obtain a Certificate of Occupancy which allows you to occupy the building.

ADDITIONAL RESOURCES:

The City of Shelby does not require a business license for any type of business. However; there may be permits and other state requirements for you to operate safely and legally in North Carolina.

The North Carolina General Assembly enacted legislation in 2014 (House Bill 1050) repealing the authority of municipalities to charge a privilege license tax effective July 1, 2015.
