| LETTER FROM THE MAYOR
Welcome to the City of Shelby Government Services Website, a Home Page that will help you find answers to frequently asked questions about City services.
If you live or work in our fine City, then you already know we are staffed by hard working and courteous individuals who work diligently to provide you with the highest level of service at all times. Many of our employees have been with us for a long time, and even if you don't know them by name, you may recognize them as your friend or neighbor.
Affectionately dubbed the "front porch" of Cleveland County, Shelby is located at the confluence of the rolling foothills of the Blue Ridge and South Mountains and the bustling Metrolina Piedmont. In 1970, Shelby was designated an "All-American City" and in 1980 it was designated one of the first National and North Carolina "Main Street" Communities.
If you're new to our City and visiting this site to investigate a job opportunity, to locate a business, or to answer a question about a city service like garbage pick up or where to pay your utility bill, then I hope you have no difficulty obtaining the information you seek. Should you need further assistance, I encourage you to contact us at the listed phone numbers and addresses. We'll be happy to help any way we can.
As Mayor and a long-time resident of Shelby, I believe our City has a lot to offer its citizens. We have first-rate schools where parents and teachers are involved in student progress. We have a City Park complex that includes an Olympic-size swimming pool, a fully functioning 1918 Hershel-Spillman Carrousel, a unique miniature train, and a challenging nine-hole golf course. And of course, we offer an abundance of quality housing, both old and new.
Our nationally recognized Uptown Business and Historic District has pedestrian-friendly, tree-lined sidewalks that bring you to the steps of the Arts Council, the year-round Farmers’ Market and an array of shops and restaurants sure to please the most discriminating customers. Shelby is the place to be in spring and summer for our award-winning "Alive After 5" outdoor concerts on the Court Square, Freedom Fest, the world's only Livermush Expo, and the Merry-Go-Round Festival. And as the holidays approach, the Court Square, under a twinkling canopy of lights, is the place to be to visit Santa's House, take a horse and carriage ride or enjoy the annual Christmas Parade.
Again, we hope visiting this website will provide you with the information you need as you learn about our "City of Pleasant Living". Please feel free to contact me or any of our City staff for further assistance. We'll be happy to help.
Sincerely,
W. Ted Alexander, Mayor
