Traffic Maintenance Technician

Performs work fabricating, installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic and informational signs, marking streets, and related work as assigned.  Responsibilities include: fabricates, installs, repairs, and maintains traffic signs and support posts;  prepares and applies reflective sheeting and lettering in making new traffic signs; removes, repairs, and refurbishes damaged and/or illegible signs; measures and lays out street and traffic markings such as center lines, crosswalks, parking lines, and lane arrows; operates motorized line painting equipment; trims bushes, hedges, and low limbs at intersections and along roadways to maintain signage visibility;  and assist with snow and ice control.

Hours: Full-time, first shift hours typically working 4 / 10-hour shifts.  Will be required to work outside of normal working hours in stand-by, on-call or other emergency situations.

To Compete in the Selection Process:

High school diploma or equivalent with experience in painting and sign work.  Must have a general knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in the preparation and installation of traffic signs and street markings; knowledge of controlling and closing traffic lanes and signs to safely detour road traffic; safety precautions related to work; skilled in the use of personal computers; ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions; ability to use common hand tools; ability to operate street and lane marking machinery and equipment; ability to perform graphic displays and drafting with a minimum of supervision; and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Special requirement:  Valid NC Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
