Natural Gas Technician III

Performs work repairing, replacing and installing gas utility lines, and appurtenances including meters, outlets, regulators, and related facilities connecting, disconnecting and restoring gas service.  Responsibilities exist to fit taps and fuse pipe; repair damaged coating; operate bush hog, backhoe, dump truck, trencher, tamp, and other related construction equipment and tools; light pilot lights; respond to and investigate gas leaks; conduct leak surveys; dig trenches by hand or machine; dig out, clean, prime, and coat service risers; inspect hazardous pipe crossings; check rectifier readings; check pressures; check interruptible consumption; stock truck; perform valve inspections and repairs; perform general and atmospheric corrosion control; clean, prime, and paint gas meters; record atmospheric corrosion data and test odorant levels; maintain rights-of-way, regulator, and farm tap stations; mow grass, trim trees, and pick up debris; assist with regulator station inspections, maintenance, and repair; perform tapping and stopping operations on the pipeline; grade leaks; and recognize abnormal operating conditions (AOC) on tasks being performed.

Hours:  Full-time, first shift hours.  Will be required to work outside of normal working hours in stand-by, on-call or other emergency situations.

To Compete in the Selection Process:

High school diploma or equivalent with moderate knowledge and experience in the maintenance, repair and/or construction of gas lines and facilities. General knowledge of the proper and safe use of common hand and specialized power tools required in the work. Ability to understand oral and written instructions including utility maps and service manuals; must have a mechanical aptitude with demonstrated effective communication and leadership skills.

Special requirement:  Possession of a valid commercial NC Driver’s License.  Must complete and maintain all of the Operator Qualification requirements as defined for Natural Gas Technician III within 2 years.  Successful completion of a welding certification program upon hire. Must complete and maintain excavation, trenching and shoring, flagging and competent person training.
