Meter Services Technician

Responsibilities include locates and reads water, electric, gas, and sewer meters on assigned routes; records readings manually or with automatic recorder; loads and unloads handhelds; obtains special reading; maintains reading records; processes service orders; connects and disconnects utility services; inspects, removes, and replaces meters; ensures that meters have visible plumbing, and connections are correctly installed and functioning properly; reports defects and/ or gas leaks and inaccessible meters; maintains vehicle and equipment; cleans out meter boxes; trims bush and limbs; mows and uses weed eater; sprays weed killer and pesticides; locates and paints water meters; identifies water meter and water ERT types and uses FDM to check for accuracy issues.

Hours: Full-time, Monday-Thursday 6:30am-5:00pm or Monday-Thursday 6:30am-3:00pm and Friday 8am-4:30pm.  Will be required to work outside of normal working hours in an on-call capacity.

To Compete in the Selection Process:

High school diploma or equivalent with experience inspecting, installing, maintaining, and removing meters.  Knowledge of utility billing terminology, methods, and procedures; occupational hazards and the safety precautions; utility billing systems constituent parts; geography and street locations; record keeping; skill in the use of personal computers, associated software packages, hardware, and peripheral equipment; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; demonstrated communication skills with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Special requirement:  Valid NC Driver’s License and ability to obtain confined space and pepper spray certifications within one year of hire and First Aid, CPR, and blood borne pathogens certifications within two years of hire.  Grade 12, minimum rate $14.38 per hour.
